Business Analysis

in Business Analysis Services

Effective business analysis ensures that changes made to strategies, structures, policies, business rules, processes, and information systems within an organisation are aligned to its strategic goals.

Michelle Sheppard is a specialist in identifying business needs and providing solutions to business problems.  Sheppard solutions are designed around three essential elements of the business analysis effort.  The redesign of core business processes, the application of enabling technologies to support the new core processes and the effective management of change.

1. Strategic Analysis

Focus on strategic matters on a continuous basis.  Michelle will analyse the strategic profile of your organisation and its environment to advise on the suitablility and effects of policy decisions.

2. Architecture

Designing changes that solve business problems identified in strategic analysis. Michelle is well-versed at analysing objectives, processes and resources, and suggesting ways by which re-design (BPR: business process re-engineering), or improvements (BPI: business process improvements) can be made.

3. IT-Systems Analysis

Systems analysis is the process of studying a procedure or business in order to identify its goals and purposes and create systems and procedures that will achieve them in an efficient way.  Michelle will focus on the IT part of the business change process, the process of defining the requirements for your businesses IT systems.

Major Types of Analysis

  • Architecture analysis
  • Business process analysis
  • Object-oriented analysis
  • Structured analysis
  • Data warehouse analysis, storage and databases analysis

Business Requirements Analysis

As a discipline 'business analysis' includes requirements analysis, sometimes also called requirements engineering. Formal planning of the requirements development process is important in determining which requirements are the highest priority for implementation.  This ensures that the change management process is planned and then implemented in line with strategic objectives.

Requirements analysis is the process of documenting the techniques that will be used to collect and document the requirements of key stakeholders in a project. Some of the techniques used in performing the process of 'requirements elicitation' include:

  • Brainstorming
  • Document analysis
  • Focus group
  • User interface analysis
  • Interviews
  • Workshops
  • Reverse engineering
  • Statistical surveys
  • Task analysis
  • Process mapping
  • Observation / job shadowing
  • Design thinking

Business Requirements Documentation (BRDs)

The most popular format for recording business requirements is the Business Requirements Document (BRD). The intent behind the BRD is to define what results would be wanted from a system, however it might eventually be designed. Hence, BRD documents are complemented with a systems reference document (SRD) that details the technology performance and infrastructure expectations including any technology requirements pertaining to quality of service, such as performance, maintainability, adaptability, reliability, availability, security, and scalability....

Requirements documentation can take several forms:

  • Requirements Analysis Report (i.e., detailing findings of business analysis and requirements )
  • Matrix (i.e., a table of requirements with priorities)
  • Diagrams (i.e., depicting how data flows from one structure to another)
  • Wireframing (i.e., detailing how elements are required in a website)
  • Models (i.e., 3-D models that describes a character in a computer game)
